Thanks to all who are following Men in Sheds, it all started in Australia in 1997, I was living in OZ at the time and it has gathered speed with the Australian Government supporting the initiative as the health and well being benefits are now being recognised. Men don't reach out but soldier on alone, we are reaching out to them and getting them active, the odd cuppa tea is not the answer, active socialising with a purpose works wonders. Thanks to the Furniture Recycling Project we have been given a fully equipped workshop to upcycle furniture and all manner of woodworking or individual projects, many are not experts but we can turn out some good looking shabby chic, the emphasis on chic not shabby.

Hi Phil. Good luck with this initiative. Men feeling lonely and isolated is a big problem, and many men find it particularly difficult to reach out. This kind of initiative really does hit the spot - men in their sheds with their toys. I worked at Age UK Glos a few years ago and there was a Men In Sheds project at the time, unfortunately I don't believe it still is running for various reasons. However, an old scout hut was renovated by the men, old tools were collected by B & Q and the men refurbished the tools to send to African countries.

Hi Phil,

I'm interested to hear about this initiative: I work at Barnwood Trust and have a brief for supporiting community spaces such as this. I would love to hear more about how it's going and whether there's any support or connections I could offer.
Best wishes
